They certainly sound or look like very spiritual to me. A song should stand by itself if you take away the lyrics from the melody and harmony and vice-versa. Take away the music from a hymn, what is left is a beautiful rhythmical poem of high literary quality. Even the music alone can provoque in the listener a sense of the divine inspiration and moves the soul and heart even when played alone.
